What Adhesive Should I Use to Install Weatherstripping?

We recommend 3M Black Weatherstrip and Gasket Adhesive #08008 (GL-11). It's the industry standard used by professional restorers.

How Weatherstrip Adhesive Works

Weatherstrip adhesive is a contact cement—it bonds when two tacky surfaces meet. Here's the key to success:

  1. Apply to BOTH surfaces (the car body AND the weatherstrip)
  2. Wait 3-5 minutes until tacky to touch
  3. Press together firmly—the bond is immediate
  4. Position carefully! Once contact is made, repositioning is difficult

When Do You Need Adhesive?

Seal Type Adhesive Needed?
Seals with clips/pins Recommended between clips for extra security
Glue-on seals (no clips) Required
Channel-fit seals Small amount at ends and curves only
Trunk seals Required or recommended depending on style

How to Apply Adhesive Correctly

Surface Preparation (Don't Skip This!)

  • Clean surfaces with rubbing alcohol or lacquer thinner
  • Remove all old adhesive residue
  • Lightly scuff metal with ScotchBrite pad for better grip
  • Let dry completely before applying new adhesive

Application Tips

  • Less is more—apply a thin, even bead
  • Spread with a popsicle stick or small brush for even coverage
  • Work in 6-12" sections, not the entire seal at once
  • Use painter's tape to hold seal in position while curing

Drying Times

Stage Time
Tacky (ready to bond) 3-5 minutes
Can close door/trunk 1 hour minimum
Full cure 24 hours

Temperature Matters

Apply adhesive between 60-90°F (15-32°C). Cold temperatures slow curing; extreme heat can cause the adhesive to set too fast.

Troubleshooting

Adhesive won't stick?

  • Surface wasn't clean—remove seal, clean again, reapply
  • Applied to only one surface—must coat BOTH sides
  • Didn't wait for tack—be patient, let it get sticky first

Need to reposition?

  • Pull surfaces apart immediately
  • Let both surfaces re-tack for 30 seconds
  • Press together again in correct position

Removing old adhesive?

  • Use a plastic scraper to avoid scratching paint
  • Adhesive remover or rubbing alcohol helps soften residue
  • A trim removal tool can help lift stubborn seal remnants without damage

Recommended Products

Pro Tip

"Glue LAST, not first." For seals with clips, install the entire seal dry first, test-fit, then go back and add adhesive between clips. This prevents messy mistakes and misaligned seals.
